Audien sells two of the cheapest over-the-counter hearing aids from an established brand, and they look almost identical in their white charging cases. The Atom One is the basic model at $98 a pair, with tiny dials for volume and tone. The Atom Air launched in May 2026 at $149 a pair, smaller and lighter according to Audien, with a longer battery and one adjustable mode instead of dials.
Both are for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, and neither has an app or Bluetooth. So the question is whether easier controls and four more hours of battery are worth $51. The scorecard above sums up the rounds. Below is how each one was decided, based on our full reviews, Audien's own materials, independent lab tests of Audien's other models and owner reports. Nobody on our team has worn either pair.
How do you adjust each one?
This is the clearest difference, and the Atom Air wins it. Audien's launch announcement describes one adjustable hearing mode with frequency control, so you can shift the tone without tools.
The Atom One has two tiny slotted dials on each aid: V for volume and f for frequency, which makes speech sound brighter or warmer. HearingTracker notes the volume dial needs a small flathead screwdriver. You set the dials with the aid out of your ear, put it back in, listen and repeat. That is fine if you set it once and leave it. It is frustrating if you want to change it when you move from a quiet room to a busy one, and hard for anyone with stiff fingers or poor close-up vision.
Battery life also favours the Air: up to 24 hours a charge, against up to 20 hours for the One. Both last a full waking day for most people. The Atom One's case is a magnetic wireless charger with USB-C.
Which one sounds better?
We cannot say, and neither can anyone else yet. We found no published lab test of either model.
The closest evidence is not encouraging for either. HearAdvisor's lab, as reported by HearingTracker, tested Audien's basic $98 Atom, a single-program, 20-hour model that closely matches the Atom One. It scored 2.6 out of 5 for speech in quiet and 1.0 for speech in noise, both below average, with limited amplification above 1,500 Hz, where consonants such as s, f and th live. The Atom Pro 2 scored even lower for speech clarity, though it controlled feedback well.
The Atom Air is newer and may do better, but there is no evidence that it breaks the pattern. Its "advanced background noise cancellation" is the offer page's phrase; Audien's announcement says "advanced sound isolation". Expect both to help most in quiet rooms and with the TV, and far less in restaurants. A hearing test before you buy tells you whether your loss is mild to moderate and the same in both ears.
What does each one cost?
The Atom One is the cheapest way to find out whether hearing aids help you.
| What you buy | Atom Air | Atom One |
|---|---|---|
| One pair | $149 | $98 |
| Two pairs | $223.50 | $162 |
| Three pairs | $298 | $216 |
Shipping is free in the US on both offer pages, and Audien's own site listed the same per-pair prices the same day, so the offer page is not a special discount. Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids, but some Medicare Advantage plans include a benefit, and OTC hearing aids are often eligible for HSA or FSA spending.
Whose claims hold up better?
The Atom One, by default. Its sales page oversells it as "the most premium" hearing aid with "superior sound quality", which a single-program aid with dials cannot be. But its basic specs match Audien's own store.
The Atom Air's offer page goes further. It lists an "A2 chip" and four listening modes (conversation, restaurant, TV and outdoor). Audien's May 2026 launch announcement, reported by Hearing Review, describes an A1 MAX chip and one adjustable mode. The page's box photo shows a manual labelled "Atom 2", Audien's earlier model with an A2 chip. Check the product listing at checkout and the manual on arrival so you know which you have.
What happens if they do not help?
The terms are the same for both, and the trial is the main reason to try either one. You have 45 days from delivery. Before a return is authorised, you must contact Audien by phone, text or email and complete a phone or video appointment. You pay return shipping, everything must come back undamaged in the original packaging, and the parcel must be in transit by day 45.
Use the trial properly: wear the aids every day in the places where you struggle, and start the return process by about day 30 so the consultation does not push you past the deadline. Audien has a large, mostly positive brand-wide owner record on Trustpilot, which covers all its models.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Atom Air if you can spend $149 and want to adjust the sound without a screwdriver, or if you want the longer battery. It is the more practical everyday aid, as long as you ignore the offer page's "4 modes" claim.
Buy the Atom One if your budget is tight, your loss is mild and you mainly need help in quiet settings. It is the lowest-cost way to learn whether hearing aids help you before spending more. If either one helps but not enough, mid-range OTC aids with apps and noise processing are the next step. For TV listening without hearing aids, see our HearDirect TV headphones review; for protecting the hearing you have, see our Hears review. Both models live in our hearing section.
Our verdict
The Atom Air is the better buy for most first-time users, scoring 6.1 against 5.8, because its adjustable mode and 24-hour battery make it easier to live with every day. The Atom One wins on price and on honest specs, and at $98 it is the cheapest sensible test of whether hearing aids help you. Neither has been lab-tested, and Audien's tested models gave limited help with speech in noise, so judge either one during the 45-day trial. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Audien Atom Air and Atom One?
The Atom One ($98) is Audien's most basic in-ear model, with tiny volume and tone dials and up to 20 hours of battery. The Atom Air ($149), launched in May 2026, is smaller and lighter according to Audien, with up to 24 hours of battery and one adjustable mode with frequency control. Neither has an app or Bluetooth.
Is the Audien Atom Air better than the Atom One?
Slightly. It scores 6.1 against 5.8 in our reviews, mostly for easier adjustment and longer battery life. Neither has been lab-tested, and Audien's tested Atom models gave limited help with speech in noise, so do not expect a big jump in sound quality for the extra $51.
Does the Atom Air really have 4 listening modes?
Its offer page says so, along with an A2 chip. Audien's own May 2026 launch announcement, reported by Hearing Review, describes an A1 MAX chip and one adjustable mode. The offer page's box photo even shows a manual labelled Atom 2. Check the listing at checkout and the manual on arrival.
Are Audien hearing aids good in restaurants?
Probably not very. In HearAdvisor lab tests reported by HearingTracker, Audien's basic $98 Atom scored 1.0 out of 5 for speech in noise. Neither the Atom Air nor the Atom One has noise processing that has been shown to fix that, so both work best in quiet rooms.
Can I return Audien hearing aids if they do not help?
Yes, within 45 days of delivery for both models, but you must contact Audien and complete a phone or video appointment before the return is authorised. You pay return shipping, everything must come back in the original packaging, and the parcel must be in transit by day 45.
